Tradescantia Care Tips
With their vibrant, trailing foliage, Tradescantia (also known as Wandering Dude or Inch Plant) make beautiful, easy-going houseplants.
General Care Guidelines
Light:
Tradescantia thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct harsh sunlight, which can burn the foliage. In lower light, the plant may grow leggy and lose some of its vibrant variegation.
Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Tradescantia prefers consistent moisture but is sensitive to overwatering—ensure the pot has good drainage. Reduce watering slightly in winter when growth slows.
Humidity:
This plant enjoys average to high humidity. Normal household levels are usually fine, but if the air is very dry, mist occasionally or place the pot on a pebble tray with water.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 60–80°F (16–27°C). Protect from drafts or sudden cold; Tradescantia dislikes temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Fertilizer:
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Pause fertilizing in winter.
Repotting:
Tradescantia grows quickly and can become crowded. Repot annually or when roots fill the pot, using a light, well-draining potting mix. You can also take cuttings to refresh older, woody growth.
Toxicity:
Mildly toxic if ingested and may cause skin irritation in some people or pets. Keep out of reach of children and animals, and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
Extra Tips
Pinch back stems regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent legginess.
Rotate the plant every week or two so all sides receive light evenly.
Tradescantia stems root easily in water or soil—great for quick propagation.
Remove faded or yellow leaves to keep the plant looking lush and healthy.
